Department of Motor Vehicles
Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles on Washington Street in Boston's Chinatown In the United States of America, a department of motor vehicles (DMV) is a state-level government agency that administers vehicle registration and driver licensing. Similar departments exist in Canada. The name "DMV" is not used in every state or province, nor are the traditional DMV functions handled by a single agency in every state, but the generic term is universally understood, particularly in the context of driver's license issuance and renewal. Main article: Vehicle registration plates of Maryland Sykesville volunteer fire department license plate, in use on a fire truck. The U.S. state of Maryland offers a large number of non-passenger and special vehicle registration plates.[1] Each type uses a two- or three-letter prefix or suffix. On plates displaying a logo at left, the prefix or suffix is displayed vertically, while on plates that do not display a logo, the prefix is displayed horizontally. Logo plates have a $25 annual fee, while non-logo plates have a $15 annual fee, unless the plate is issued to a vehicle belonging to a member of a volunteer fire department or a Disabled American Veteran. United States license plate designs and serial formats
Main article: Vehicle registration plates of the United States In the United States, the appearance of license plates is frequently chosen to contain staples, cultures, or slogans associated with the issuing jurisdiction, which are the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia, each of which independently registers motor vehicles. Formats for license plate numbers, which are usually alphanumeric, are chosen to provide enough unique serials for all motor vehicles a jurisdiction expects to register. For example, less-populous states such as Delaware and Rhode Island are able to use formats of 123456 and 123-456, respectively, while several populous states use seven-character formats, including 1ABC234 in California, AB1-C234 in Texas,[1] ABC-1234 in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, Washington, and Arizona, 1A/B2345 in Maryland, A12-3456 in Illinois, and 1234ABC in Indiana.[2] In some states, info such as the month of expiration or the county of regist...
