Duroville
Duroville is the nickname for the Desert Mobile Home Park near Thermal, California USA. The trailer park, which sits on the Torres Martinez Indian Reservation, is nicknamed for owner Harvey Duro, Sr., a member of the tribal council. Duro set the park up after several other sub-standard trailer parks in the area were closed by authorities in Riverside County and residents had no place to live.[1] Duro was unable to obtain Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) approval for a lease for the site of Duroville and received no financial or other assistance from the BIA in licensing or setting up the facility. The BIA channeled its efforts into an action in the United States District Court for the Central District of California asking that the trailer park be closed.[2] The trailer park, established in 1999, is adjacent to a smouldering dump, which is closed has been subject to recurrent fires. About 4,000 migrant Mexican farm workers live in several hundred dilapidated mobile homes on 40 acres (1... (see more)

Juan Felipe Herrera
Juan Felipe Herrera, at the Lannan Center Juan Felipe Herrera (born December 27, 1948 Fowler, California) is a poet, performer, writer, cartoonist, teacher, and activist. The only son of María de la Luz (Lucha) Quintana and Felipe Emilio Herrera, the three were campesinos living from crop to crop, and from tractor to trailer to tents on the roads of the San Joaquín Valley, Southern California and the Salinas Valley. Herrera's experiences as the child of migrant farmers have strongly shaped his work, such as the children's book Calling the Doves, which won the Ezra Jack Keats Book Award in 1997. Community and art has always been part of what has driven Herrera, beginning in the mid-seventies, when he was director of the Centro Cultural de la Raza, an occupied water tank in Balboa Park that had been converted into an arts space for the community. Herrera’s publications include fourteen collections of poetry, prose, short stories, young adult novels and picture books for chil... (see more)
