    The U.S. state of Alabama has issued license plates for motorized vehicles operated on state highways since 1911. Some Alabama municipalities issued their own license plates for horse-drawn vehicles as well as motorcars prior to that date, with the earliest surviving example being a bronze plate, "No. 1", issued by the city of Bessemer for a two-horse dray.[1] The law establishing state-issued plates provided that they would be 4 and one half inches wide by no more than 12 inches long, with the letters "ALA" running vertically on the left and 3" tall numerals with 1/2" strokes. Plate #1 was issued to the Leak Funeral Home in Montgomery[1] In 1916 Alabama switched from porcelain to stamped tin plates. Beginning in 1917 the issue year was stamped onto the plate, and in 1919 the size of the plates was increased to 6" x 15".     Since 1921, the U.S. state of Alaska has issued license plates for vehicles registered there. Alaska became a state in 1959, plates prior to that year were issued by the Territory of Alaska. State law requires two license plates, one on the front and on on the rear, to be displayed on a motor vehicle, with the exception of motorcycles and trailers. (March 2012) The U.S. state of Connecticut began requiring its residents to display license plates on their motor vehicles in 1905. Since then, Connecticut has used a variety of license plate designs, and has issued different designs for passenger, non-passenger, and, more recently, optional plate types that often require an additional fee. Plates are issued in pairs, one each for the rear and front of the vehicle, for most classes of vehicles. For most classes of vehicles, plate validation stickers, or metal date tabs in earlier decades, were discontinued in favor of windshield stickers beginning in September 2006.
