  • Awards and decorations of the National Guard

    Awards and decorations of the National Guard are presented to members of the United States National Guard and sometimes to members of the state defense forces in addition to regular United States military decorations. Each of the state governments of the United States maintains a series of military decorations for issuance to members of the National Guard, with such awards presented under the authority of the various state adjutants general. Those National Guard soldiers who subsequently serve in the active or reserve federal forces of the United States Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or United States Air Force (i.e., as active duty or reserve members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard) may not continue to wear and display such decorations on a military uniform, unless such activation is under Title 32 status. The 217-acre (88 ha) park includes an ice rink, a lake and pavilion, as well as a scenic picnic area. As the community grew there was a need for a large park. In 1931, the city acquired land north of Military Avenue and it became Benson Park. A 9-hole golf course opened in the park that year, but was closed in 1947. The golf course reopened in the 1960s with an 18 hole golf course.[1] The Omaha Tornado of 1975 lifted into the clouds at Benson Park, between the ice rink and lake.[2] The park was renovated in 1999, deepening the lake and adding trails and sidewalks.   • First Nebraska Militia

    The First Nebraska Militia was a temporary military force mobilized by Territorial Governor Alvin Saunders in August, 1864 during the Indian uprising of 1864 which threatened travelers on the Overland Trail and settlers on the frontier. The First Nebraska Militia reinforced the Seventh Iowa Cavalry, which had previously been deployed and had constructed Fort McPherson near present day North Platte, Nebraska, and the First Nebraska Veteran Volunteer Cavalry.[1] The Nebraska MILITIA were frontiersmen who furnished their own horses and arms. They were, as soldiers, first-class in every respect.
