In all North Carolina counties, all passenger vehicles under 35 years old require a yearly Safety Inspection. 48 of North Carolina’s 100 counties require inspected vehicles to undergo a yearly Safety and Emission inspection for vehicles that are model years 1996 or newer. Passenger Vehicles over 35 years old no longer require inspection. In addition, any vehicle in one of the 48 Safety and Emission counties that has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) greater than 8,500 pounds only requires a Safety inspection.[1] NC Vehicle Inspe... Nebraska requires safety inspection only upon newly arrived vehicles which were previously registered in another state. New Jersey discontinued its passenger vehicle safety inspection program on August 1, 2010.[1] Under the Clean Air Act (1990), states are required to implement vehicle emissions inspection programs, known as I/M programs (for Inspection and Maintenance), in metropolitan areas whose air quality does not meet federal standards. The specifics of those programs vary from state to state.
