The Miss Rhode Island USA competition is the beauty pageant that selects the representative for the state Rhode Island in the Miss USA pageant. Historically, Rhode Island has been comparatively unsuccessful at Miss USA but has been one of the most consistent states since 2000, with four semi-finalist placements and one first runner-up placement. On June 3, 2012, Olivia Culpo won the first Miss USA title for the state of Rhode Island. On December 19, 2012, Olivia Culpo became the first Rhode Islander to win the title of Miss Universe. Covering 147 mi2 (380 km2) -- 120.5 mi2 (312 km2) in Rhode Island[1] -- the Bay forms New England's largest estuary, which functions as an expansive natural harbor, and includes a small archipelago.[2] Small parts of it extend into Massachusetts. Of over thirty islands in the Bay, the three largest ones are Aquidneck Island, Conanicut Island, and Prudence Island.[3] Bodies of water that are part of Narragansett Bay include the Sakonnet River; Mount Hope Bay; and the southern, tidal part of the Taunton River. The bay opens on Rhode Island Sound — Block Island lies less than 20 miles (32 km) southwest of its opening — and the Atlantic Ocean.
