Department of Motor Vehicles
Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles on Washington Street in Boston's Chinatown In the United States of America, a department of motor vehicles (DMV) is a state-level government agency that administers vehicle registration and driver licensing. Similar departments exist in Canada. The name "DMV" is not used in every state or province, nor are the traditional DMV functions handled by a single agency in every state, but the generic term is universally understood, particularly in the context of driver's license issuance and renewal. United States license plate designs and serial formats
Main article: Vehicle registration plates of the United States In the United States, the appearance of license plates is frequently chosen to contain staples, cultures, or slogans associated with the issuing jurisdiction, which are the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia, each of which independently registers motor vehicles. Formats for license plate numbers, which are usually alphanumeric, are chosen to provide enough unique serials for all motor vehicles a jurisdiction expects to register. For example, less-populous states such as Delaware and Rhode Island are able to use formats of 123456 and 123-456, respectively, while several populous states use seven-character formats, including 1ABC234 in California, ABC-1234 in Texas,[1] ABC-1234 in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, Washington, and Arizona, 1A/B2345 in Maryland, A12-3456 in Illinois, and 1234ABC in Indiana.[2] In some states, info such as the month of expiration or the county of regist... Vehicle registration plates of Alabama
The U.S. state of Alabama has issued license plates for motorized vehicles operated on state highways since 1911. Some Alabama municipalities issued their own license plates for horse-drawn vehicles as well as motorcars prior to that date, with the earliest surviving example being a bronze plate, "No. 1", issued by the city of Bessemer for a two-horse dray.[1] The law establishing state-issued plates provided that they would be 4 and one half inches wide by no more than 12 inches long, with the letters "ALA" running vertically on the left and 3" tall numerals with 1/2" strokes. Plate #1 was issued to the Leak Funeral Home in Montgomery[1] In 1916 Alabama switched from porcelain to stamped tin plates. Beginning in 1917 the issue year was stamped onto the plate, and in 1919 the size of the plates was increased to 6" x 15". In 1922 a code for the vehicles weight class was added to the plates and Kilby Prison near Montgomery took charge of all manufacture in 1928.[1] In 1942 Alabam... (see more)
